How to Make Your Laptop Last Longer

Author: Salem Carlsen

With the technology of today, computers have become part of everybody's daily life, from playing games to making a living. As time went on, the advent of laptops and notebooks, which add portability to the formula of the already useful platform, made the end users rely more on their gadgets.
Just like any electronic device, however, laptops have their own lifespan. With misuse, carelessness, ignorance and neglect, their relatively short lifespan can decrease from years to months.
So how do you make sure your laptop lasts longer? Follow these simple steps and you're guaranteed to get the most out of your money's worth.
Food and drinks
Spilling food and/or drinks on your laptop is one of the most common mistakes that you can do to your laptop, regardless if it's deliberate or accidental. To avoid this, simply refrain from eating and drinking in front of it.
Handle with care
Although manufacturers say that they are built with durability in mind, it doesn't mean you can just freely slam them shut or throw them anywhere. Even a well-placed nudge on a laptop can damage its internal parts and break it entirely.
Temperature
Ventilation is very important to a laptop. Putting it on top of soft surfaces, like your bed, is a big mistake. Laptop exhausts are generally placed underneath it. Blocking these passages would prevent the regular cooling process of your laptop and would effectively shorten its lifespan.
Cleaning and maintenance
When cleaning the laptop's LCD screen, be sure to use a lint-free cloth and wipe slowly and carefully. Remember that laptop displays are sensitive and too much pressure on them might cause them to crack.
Also, remember to protect the software part of the laptop by regularly scanning for problems. You can also install a reliable anti-virus software. The hardware part is not the only aspect that is prone to issues, after all.
External add-ons and accessories
Make sure you connect external devices to the correct slot in your laptop. When removing most USB-type connections, an option to safely remove them is always available.
Laptop batteries
Laptop batteries have a lifespan of their own. A fully-charged battery doesn't need to be kept plugged into the power outlet. If you prefer to keep the charger plugged in, remove the battery if it is fully charged. Additionally, it is also best to remove them when your laptop will not be used for a while.
A last word of advice: don't wait for the laptop to exhibit major problems. If you notice anything suspicious, quickly address the issue by bringing your device for repair service or consulting with someone who knows computers well. Always remember that, just like what the doctors say, prevention is better than cure.
